Is cosmetic dentistry worth it?

When deciding whether or not to invest in a cosmetic dental treatment, a worthwhile exercise is to evaluate your confidence level.

Have your teeth ever kept you from smiling, laughing or speaking in front of others? Do you get the feeling that people are staring at your teeth when you’re talking to them? Cosmetic dentistry treatments can help you achieve your most confident smile.

Honest Conversation

To begin, you should discuss with your dentist how you honestly feel about your smile. What are the issues or imperfections that make you feel self-conscious? What would you change? What are the parts you like and appreciate about your smile? It’s all relevant and it’s all important for your doctor to understand.

Comprehensive Exam

Next, your Woburn dentist will give you a comprehensive oral exam to identify any issues that may disqualify you from a particular treatment. Cosmetic dentistry should only be performed on healthy teeth. If you require any restorative work, your doctor will let you know at this time.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening

Take-home whitening lets you whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home, and provides more subtle, gradual results over the course of about a week.

We’ll first take impressions of your teeth using either dental putty or digitally with an intraoral scanner. With these impressions, a set of reusable custom whitening trays will be manufactured just for you.

Once the trays are ready, they’ll be given to you along with the whitening product and instructions for their use. Simply follow your dentist’s instructions, and you’ll get professional-grade results in no time!

In-Office Teeth Whitening

In-office whitening is done by your dentist, and provides fast results. Treatments can brighten your smile up to 10 shades in about an hour, so the treatment is perfect if you want to whiten your teeth for an upcoming special occasion.

Your dentist will apply a special protective gel to your gums, while using retractors to keep your cheeks away from your teeth and the whitening treatment. Then, they will apply a powerful whitener to your teeth and activate it with a UV light. After usually around an hour, the treatment is rinsed away to reveal a brighter, more beautiful smile. This process may be repeated several times over multiple appointments to achieve your desired level of whiteness.

Dental Bonding, Shaping & Contouring

Dental bonding uses a special tooth-colored dental resin, that is applied directly to your tooth during treatment. Your dentist will shape and sculpt this resin to correct the shape of your tooth, restoring the look and functionality of your smile. This procedure typically takes only 30-60 minutes per tooth, and is completely non-invasive.

Shaping & contouring (enameloplasty) is also often used alongside bonding. In this process, a thin layer of enamel is removed from uneven teeth or teeth with imperfections like points or minor chipping. This provides you with a more even, appealing smile.

Veneers

Veneers are tooth-shaped dental prostheses that cover the front surfaces of your teeth. These thin shells of porcelain allow you to treat small gaps between teeth, severe staining, misshapen or uneven teeth, and much more. They are very durable and long-lasting, and can completely transform your smile. However, they are permanent and cannot be removed. This is because they require the removal of some of your natural enamel, which is an irreversible process.

Cosmetic Dental Makeovers

Not sure if any of the above treatments are right for you, or think you may need multiple treatments to restore your smile? Ask your dentist about a cosmetic dental makeover.

A cosmetic dental makeover is a customized, multi-treatment plan that’s designed to treat and address every issue you may have with your smile. The process is different for each patient, and often involves multiple cosmetic and restorative dental procedures. But the goal for every patient is to have them feeling proud of their smiles after all procedures are complete.

KöR Teeth Whitening

KöR Whitening is one of the most versatile and effective teeth whitening systems, making it one of the most popular ways to brighten your smile. With both take-home and in-office options, KöR Whitening can help you get the beautiful, sparkling grin you deserve.

KöR at-home whitening lets you gradually whiten your teeth over the course of about 2 weeks, all in the comfort of your own home. To further customize the treatment, we offer both KöR-Day™ or KöR-Night™ teeth whitening options, so you can choose the option that best fits your lifestyle.

Nighttime whitening is often the most cost-effective and convenient whitening option, as it can provide you with outstanding results while you sleep. If you have sensitive teeth or prefer not to wear whitening trays while you sleep, KöR-Day™ could be the option for you!

KöR in-office whitening is the best choice for patients looking for fast results that can brighten your smile by multiple shades in a single visit. By combining in-office and at-home whitening treatments, we can help patients achieve their desired results, even on the most stubborn stains. No matter which treatment route you take, the results will be remarkable.

What dental issues can cosmetic dentistry solve?

Cosmetic dentistry can solve just about any dental issue that’s related to the appearance of your teeth. Teeth whitening is obviously used to treat stained teeth and can help you look younger. Bonding, shaping, and contouring can repair misshapen and uneven teeth, or treat minor tooth damage, such as chips or breaks. Dental crowns are occasionally used for cosmetic purposes, too. Treatments as versatile as veneers or Lumineers can often be used to treat all the previously mentioned issues as well as correcting gaps between teeth, more severe tooth staining, and slightly crooked or crowded teeth.

Am I a good candidate for cosmetic dental treatments?

As long as your teeth and gums are healthy and you’re free of any major orthodontic issues, you’re likely a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry.

Oppositely, cosmetic treatment is not right for you if you have oral health problems like gum disease or cavities, or if you have major issues with the alignment of your teeth or jaw. You’ll need restorative care or orthodontic treatment to resolve these problems before you can get cosmetic dental treatment. But often, restorative care and orthodontics can give you a healthier and more beautiful smile.

Can I get more than one cosmetic dental procedure done at the same time?

arrow icon

Yes. While this does depend on the type of treatment that’s right for you, it’s quite common to have multiple cosmetic dental procedures done at the same time. Dental bonding and enameloplasty, for example, are often done in the same appointment. Ask your dentist for more information, and to find out if you can have multiple procedures done at once.

Is cosmetic dentistry covered by dental insurance?

arrow icon

It’s rare for cosmetic dentistry to be covered by dental insurance. These procedures are often listed as elective and not necessary to the health of your smile. In some cases, your insurance may cover a portion of the cost of treatments like cosmetic crowns or veneers, but this is not common. In most cases, you will need to pay for treatment out-of-pocket. Contact your insurer for more details on your dental insurance coverage. Then contact our practice to see if we have any available discounts or payment plans to help you cover treatment.

Do Cosmetic Dental Treatments Hurt?

arrow icon

No, cosmetic dental treatments are not painful. We offer minimally invasive cosmetic treatments that are painless when performed under local anesthetic. We also offer dental sedation to make you as comfortable as possible and relieve dental anxiety.

Many cosmetic treatments are non-invasive and don’t even require the use of anesthetics, such as teeth whitening and dental bonding. However, when we do use dental drills and other tools, you will not feel any pain because you will be numb.

We keep our patient’s comfort as our top priority and are happy to discuss any of your concerns with you or to help make you feel more comfortable during your treatment.

Are Cosmetic Dental Treatments Safe?

arrow icon

Yes, cosmetic dental treatments are completely safe when administered by dental professionals who take the time and care to craft a personalized dental treatment for you with advanced dental tools.

We offer many minimally invasive cosmetic treatments that are safer than their drugstore counterparts. Teeth whitening, for example, is available through over-the-counter products, many of which have not been FDA-approved.

Patients often don’t follow instructions or use whitening products that are too abrasive and cause irritation or damage to their gums and teeth. Harsh bleaching products can cause enamel erosion which increases your risk for cavities and damage.

At Woburn Dental Associates, we will carefully protect your soft tissues with protective gels and cheek protractors and take impressions of your teeth to craft whitening trays that perfectly fit over your teeth so the whitening agent doesn’t come into contact with your gums.

We are careful to never remove too much tooth structure in preparation for a cosmetic treatment and we carefully evaluate your oral health and tooth structure to ensure that you’re a good candidate for a particular treatment. We will never recommend a cosmetic treatment that could compromise your oral health.

How Much Do Cosmetic Dental Treatments Cost?

arrow icon

The cost of a cosmetic dental treatment can vary widely depending on many different factors, such as the complexity of the procedure, the type of dental materials used, qualifications of the cosmetic dentist, how advanced the dental tools being used are, if it involves an outside dental lab, how many teeth are being treated, length of treatment, and where the dental practice is located.

Generally, the less invasive and fewer appointments required for treatment, the more affordable it will be. The most affordable and popular cosmetic dental treatment is teeth whitening. Cosmetic dental makeovers can range in cost depending on how many treatments are being performed and veneers are the most costly single cosmetic procedure but they last for decades.

We can give you a more specific quote during your consultation. Unfortunately, dental insurance does not cover cosmetic treatments because they are considered elective and not medically necessary, but we offer financing options to help you fund the cost of your treatment.

Is Cosmetic Dentistry Worth It?

arrow icon

Many patients find cosmetic dentistry well worth the process, time, and cost it takes to invest in their smile. Not only does cosmetic dentistry improve the appearance of their teeth, but it can make patients look younger, boost their confidence, and even repair minor damage to teeth.

Feeling good about your smile and wanting to show it off is just as valuable as having good oral health. Without being happy with your smile, you’re less motivated to practice good oral hygiene and care for your teeth.

Feeling insecure about aesthetic imperfections can lead to social isolation, missed opportunities, and low self-esteem. Contact us at Woburn Dental Associates to schedule a consultation and improve your smile today.
